Museum of the Cathedral

It is located next to the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 45 minutes.
The building was constructed between 1621 and 1656. It was rebuilt in 1848 by Lucas Poblete, after the fire of 1844. He was also in charge of a second reconstruction after the earthquake of 1868. It is neoclassical, made in ashlar (volcanic stone), with brick vaults. Access doors are located in the lateral naves. It highlights the Monumental Organ of 12 meters height brought from Belgium; the Pulpit that was brought from Lille - France in 1879 and the custody. The earthquake of June 23, 2001 seriously affected its towers but now they look restored.

La Recoleta convent

It is located 5 minutes from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 1 hour.
It was founded in 1648 and presents different styles ranging from Romanesque to Gothic, because of the different reconstructions, being the last one in 1940. It has four cloisters, eleven rooms, two rooms of pre-Columbian art, two rooms dedicated to the Amazon and a room of religious art. It also has an art gallery with paintings of the Cusco and Arequipa schools and a valuable library that protects more than 20 thousand volumes. During the night tour it is possible to access the tower and to the cemetery.

Moral house

It is located two blocks from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 45 minutes.
It was made in the XVIII century; it has a baroque architectural style. The name is because in the house there is an ancient mulberry tree in the main courtyard. The cover shows carefully carved figures, which are a crown on a shield which in turn is hold by two angels; the shield is composed of a castle, a bird, a puma and two crossed keys. The house has a showroom of ancient maps of the XVI century America; also it features furniture from colonial and republican era.

Andean Sanctuaries Museum – Juanita mummy

It is located one block from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 1 hour.
It exposes the mummy Juanita also known as the Lady of Ampato. It would be a 14 year old girl, an Inca mummy that was found accidentally on the Ampato volcano on 8 September 1995 by the climber Miguel Zarate, archaeologist Jose Chavez and the anthropologist Johan Reinhard. It is said that the girl had died from a blow to the head with truncheon five-pointed granite. Apparently it would have been an offering to Apu Ampato 500 years ago.

Art Museum of Saint Theresa Monastery

It is located six blocks from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 45 minutes.
It was opened in 1710 and the rooms are located in one of the cloisters of the Monastery of Santa Teresa. Exposes one of the best selections of painting, sculpture, jewelry, everyday objects; also it presents the process of the different techniques used in the various works exhibited. One room retains its original decoration on the walls, like a tapestry. The museum has a cafe that sells sweets made by the nuns of the convent.

José Villalobos Ampuero Museum House

It is located two blocks from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 1 hour.
It was built in the early twentieth century. The decoration recreates a space of the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It preserves and exhibits an important collection of works brought Asia and Europe made by great masters like Titian, Goya, Lefone, Erard, Wedgwood, among others. On its facade highlights the carved wooden gate and in the rooms are exhibited porcelain ornaments; paintings that preserve the original frames; lamps that presumed have decorated palaces and more. The house represents the arequipeña civil architecture and is still inhabited by the family.

Mario Vargas Llosa Virtual Museum

It is located five blocks from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 2 hours.
It is the only virtual museum that owns Arequipa. It has been set in the house where Mario Vargas Llosa, the Nobel Prize for Literature was born. It has 16 showrooms carefully acclimated under a thematic exhibition, with projections and the chronological narrative of the life of the writer such as love, passions, griefs, joys, desires, etc. The structure of the literature, the performing arts implemented the atmosphere of each room, the combination of narration of the author and the visual effects and 3D projections transmit to the visitors a unique experience.

Del Solar Neighborhood

It is located three blocks from the Main Plaza. Visiting time: 1 hour.
It features 3 tambos ("inn" and tanpu in quechua. It was an Incan structure built for administrative and military purposes) dating from the eighteenth century. The Tambo of Bronze, was occupied by the Chileans during the Pacific War, there, they were located their artillery barracks with its bronze cannons. After the war some of the cannons were left there as lease payment however their metal was reused after some years. Tambo of Matadero which was a slaughterhouse; it has vaults, and it was made in ashlar. Tambo of the Cabezona (big head) was initially part of the system of mills until the late nineteenth century; its name is the nickname of Lady Maria Antonieta Chirinos Soto who was its first owner.

The route of Sillar

It is located 8 km from the city (30 minutes). Visiting time: Half day.
One of the reasons why Arequipa is known as “Ciudad Blanca” (the white city), is because of the color of monuments made in sillar or ignimbrite, which is petrified volcanic lava. This material is extracted from quarries and now it is possible to visit them and to be part of this tourist circuit of natural landscape and culture alive. It has 2,000 meters covering the area of exploitation "Cutters" and the virgin quarry "Culebrillas". The extraction process and the wrought ashlar are observed besides the megatallados process; wildlife and petroglyphs. There are exhibition and sale of crafts in ashlar.

Hot springs of Yura

It is located 25 km north of the city (1 hour and 15 minutes). Visiting time: 1 day.
They are located in the district of Yura, about 2590 meters above sea level. Yura has a dry climate and a maximum temperature of 22 ° C. The waters come from the Chachani volcano and its properties are quite renowned for their healing properties. Water temperatures range between 23 ° and 28 ° C. The resort offers accommodation and food services. The district of Yura also has natural atractions such as the Corontorio waterfall and the hot springs of Quiscos.

National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca

It is located 80 km from the city (1 hour and 30 minutes). Visiting time: 1 day.
It has important associations of flora and fauna. Among the most representative species include vicuna, guanaco, puma, the Andean flamingo or parihuana, the fox, the condor and vizcacha. The place houses the Laguna de Salinas (6182 hectares), where you can see the three types of flamingos (Andean, common and James); between the months of May to October, the bottom of the lake is exposed and you can see a giant layer of salt. There are also stone forests like Pillones and Imata, with rocky curious formations product of the erosion.

The ruins of Uyo Uyo – Colca valley

It is located 160 km from Arequipa (3 hours and 30 minutes). Visiting time: 1 or 2 days.
This district is located in the Colca Valley. Among its main attractions are the Immaculate Conception Church, the UyoUyo archaeological complex, the thermal baths of Chacapi and the Amphitheatre of Occolle. Uyo Uyo is a Collagua construction that was used for ceremonial purposes and for housing. The amphitheater of Occolle is located 1.5 km from Yanque, it is known as the coliseum of the Incas. It has two types of platforms differentiated by their height to create microclimates that are favorable for various crops.

Archaeological Fortress Chimpa – Colca valley

It is located in Madrigal 188 km from Arequipa (5 hours by car and 2 hours by foot). Visiting time: 1 or 2 days.
It was made in stone. The majesty and vastness of the valley and the Colca Canyon is observed at different angles from its top. It is thought to have been built for ceremonial purposes and strategic control because from the top you can see the people of Madrigal, Lari, Ichupampa, Pinchollo, Cabanaconde and Tapay. The complex is surrounded by a great wall plus colcas (storages), litho models (design of terraces and irrigation systems on the stones). It was declared Cultural Heritage of Peru in 2011.

Cotahuasi Canyon

It is located 375 km northwest from Arequipa (11 hours). Visiting time: 4 days.
It has different climates that have created the conditions for a rich biodiversity, with high levels of endemism in flora and fauna. It also houses attractions such as the canyon Cotahuasi (3535 MASL); Sipia cataract (150 MASL); the Bañadero of Condor, where usually the condors refresh in a natural pond that is formed by a waterfall (400 MASL). The cactus forest (1936 MASL), habitat of birds like the urpi, the hummingbird of purple necklace and the barn swallow, besides the fox and bat (Peruvian Longirostro). There are also thermal baths (33 °C - 38 °C); the viewpoint and the waterfall of Uskune and the stone forest of Huito.

The Petroglyphs of Toro Muerto and the route of Pisco

It is located 163 km from Arequipa (3 hours).Visiting time: 1 day.
It is considered one of the most important archaeological complexes of petroglyphs in Peru of the Tertiary era. The ashlar blocks are spread over an approximate area of 5 km2 that show some anthropomorphic, zoomorphic, fitomorfas, geometric and mythological drawings that were made with different techniques like scratched, rubbed, desastillado and percussion. Some kilometres more from it is Querullpa, where have found prints of dinosaurs of 60 and 90 cm each one that are from about 150 million years ago. This tour finishes with the visit to the artisan wineries making wine and pisco.

The valley of Volcanoes - Castilla

It is 323 km from Arequipa (10 hours). Visiting time: 3 days.
Andagua is known as the land of volcanoes because there have been identified 36 volcanic cones from 10 to 300 meters high, and more than 100 eruptives foci. It houses attractive shapes of volcanoes such as the Twins (3700 MASL) and the volcanoe Kanallamauras among others. The Shanquillay fall (20 m). The ruins of Antaymarca, belonging to the Inca culture Collagua early; the viewpoint of Antaymarca from where other volcanoes are observed besides the lake of Mamacocha which is a refuge for bird life as woodpeckers, chiguancos, tanagers, owls, several species of bats and otters or huallaques.

The frozen waterfalls and the thermal baths – Castilla

It is 38 km from Andagua (2 hours). Visiting time: 1 día.
The frozen waterfalls of Panagua (4367 masl) in Orcopampa, are a natural wonder. The waters of Paychi Paccha, Chillhuani and Pukara freeze in this area giving rise to a beautiful scene of ice. Also during the tour we will find another waterfall called Hatun Paqcha. The flora is represented by grasses that grown over this height, we will also find trees such as eucalyptus and pine. In this circuit it is possible to visit the thermal baths of Huancarama, which has individual pools and pools. This option is possible in one day only if you visit it from Andagua otherwise it will take much time from Arequipa.

A fog oasis at the Atiquipa Lomas

It is located 417 km from Arequipa in the province of Caraveli (8 hours). Visiting time: 3 days.
The Lomas of Atiquipa are considered the most important in southern Peru. The area comprises from Quebrada de la Waca up to Agua Salada (Salt Water), approximately 14 kilometers in a longitudinal extension from south to north. It is an attractive landscape, the vegetation is mainly herbaceous highlighting the Amancae and papita of San Juan, wild tomato, wild snuff, lily of the Inca, the nolana, valerian, and heliotrope; among the trees are myrtle, huarango, and the arrayan. It is a rewarding sight for the visitors because the landscape is really amazing.

Mejía Lagoons National Sanctuary

It is located in Mejía 152 km from Arequipa (2 hours and 40 minutes). Visiting time: 1 day.
It has an area of 690 hectares and it is in front of the sea. It is the refuge and resting place for migratory birds in more than 2000 km from the Pacific coast, mainly birds coming from the northern hemisphere, such as Sanderling (Calidris Alba). On the banks of the lagoons live the toad (Bufo limensis), while on the hills of the nearby beaches there are lizards like Microlophus tigris and the coastal fox (Pseudolapex sechurae). Also there have been reported some fish species such as mullet (Mugil cephalus) and silverside (Basilichthys sp.).

Trekking in Colca Canyon

It is located 195 kilometers from Arequipa (5 hours and 30 minutes) Visiting time: 2 or 3 days.
It is the deepest canyon in Peru and America (4160 meters). It is surrounded by the volcanoes Coropuna, Ampato and Sabancaya. There are two routes; one can be done in 2 days and the other in 3 days. From Cabanaconde we will reach the villages that are inside the canyon and on both routes we enjoy the Andean landscape composed by the river, the villages, the flora and the fauna. We will also observe the condor in its natural habitat. The favorable time of visit is during the whole year however after the rainy seasons the landscape is more beautiful (March and April).
